Integration Test - Basic Theory & Importance

What is an Integration Test?

An integration test checks whether multiple software modules or components work together correctly. In the context of an ASP.NET Core Web API, an integration test exercises your entire request pipeline—including Routing, Middleware, Authentication, Controllers, Filters, and Database Contexts—just like a real HTTP request from a client but running in an in-memory test server.

Why Are Integration Tests Crucial?

  • Catches Wiring Mistakes: Unit tests mock dependencies, meaning they won't catch dependency injection misconfigurations, broken routing attributes, or bad JSON serialization settings.
  • High Confidence: They simulate real-world usage without the overhead and flakiness of full end-to-end (E2E) UI tests.
  • Validates Middleware & Pipeline: Ensures that security headers, exception-handling middleware, and authorization policies work harmoniously.
Install the required NuGet package:

NUnit
NUnit3TestAdapter
Microsoft.NET.Test.Sdk
Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc.Testing
